Unhappy Little Houses

things aren’t what they seem
in these happy little houses
that have walls that are filled with
the portraits of smiling faces
faking a picture of perfection

an illusion that is easy to miss
if you look close enough
you’ll see the emptiness
behind the eyes
of the perfect family

strangers with the same last name
that use words of hate
to wound each other
when the spotlight goes away
and the facade breaks

because the problems stay hidden
stashed away
like the pill bottles that are missing
or the whiskey that everyone is secretly drinking
or the money that keeps disappearing
in these unhappy little houses
